Show up. That’s my advice.

“The only thing that I have done that is not mitigated by luck, diminished by good fortune, is that I persisted, and other people gave up.” Think about it. We scroll through Instagram every day looking at the lives, bodies, lifestyles, relationships, and jobs we think we wished we had. Here’s the thing… the only difference (beyond luck and convenience of circumstance) between the person who changed their life and you is that they didn’t give up. Don’t put people’s results on a pedestal. Those you can have. Heck, once you’re there, you may love your own results more. You may laugh when you look in the mirror or at your life and realize you’d wished it look so much like someone else’s version of perfect and not your own. Don’t put that on a pedestal. If anything, look up to their determination. That’s where the magic lies… in not giving up… in going forward even when the future and the results aren’t guaranteed. In trusting your own greatness and potential in the fuzzy, hard to read outline of who you could be. The only thing they did differently is refused to give up. Don’t give up.

Progress. Just make progress. You’re not too old. It’s not too late. The scale isn’t moving too slowly. It’s all okay. It’s okay to have set backs. It’s okay to have off days. It’s okay to draw a line in the sand and start over and over again. Just keep inching the line forward. Just take tiny, minuscule steps in the right direction that keep you from getting stuck. Move forward. Even slowly. It’s okay. It’s all okay. Change will come. 2014: Morbidly obese. Hypothyroidism. High blood pressure. Teetering on the edge of prediabetes. Hated exercise. Four years ago, I was teetering on the edge of pre-diabetes. I had hypothyroidism and blood pressure problems. I carried fat around my midsection that made me an almost inevitable candidate for heart disease. When I looked in the mirror, I had stretch marks, cellulite, and other imperfections. The woman in the mirror was the enemy. I was barely in my 20s and, at best, heading down a road of medications, diseases, and disorders for the rest of my life. At worst, I was killing myself. Four years later, I no longer teeter on the edge of pre-diabetes. I’m free of hypothyroidism and blood pressure problems. I carry loose skin around my midsection that does not make me a candidate for heart disease. When I look in the mirror, I have stretch marks, cellulite, and other imperfections. The woman in the mirror is a friend. I’m 26 and heading down a road of self-acceptance, personal growth, and physical and emotional well being. Four years later, I can tell you this: focusing on physical health is a wonderfully rewarding process. Focusing on mental health? That’s a LIFE CHANGING process. Today, I challenge you to speak to the person in the mirror as a friend, not an enemy. Give them the same kindness, understanding, patience, and compassion that you would someone you love. One day. One week. One month. Watch the world change around you. Kindness to others. Kindness to self.
